U.S.S. Allagash (AO-97) film of Abbot

1956 and Fall 1957

Allagash was a Cimarron-class oiler constructed for the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A crew member, Bill Jolliff, filmed fleet operations in 1956 and in the Mediterranean in fall 1957. Among the scenes is spectacular footage of Abbot refueling in heavy seas in fall 1957.

In some scenes, aircraft have pre-1957 tail markings, and in other scenes 1957-era tail markings are seen.

Among the other ships seen are the famed Fletcher-class destroyer Hazelwood, the Forrestal-class aircraft carrier Saratoga, the Des Moines-class heavy cruiser Salem, and the first guided missile cruiser, Boston.

Music is “Victory at Sea” by Richard Rodgers and Robert Russell Bennett.
