Abbot and Destroyer Division 242 circumnavigated the globe during the last half of 1954, and this 64-page cruise book commemorates the event.
Some of the major events that occured elsewhere during the cruise: The Senate censured Sen. Joseph R. McCarthy following his slander-laden investigation of the Army; President Eisenhower offered aid to South Vietnam; Sports Illustrated was first published; and Elvis Presley sang “Blue Moon of Kentucky” at the Grand Ole Opry.
Ports of call on the cruise included Hawaii, Japan, Aden, Suez, the Azores, Sri Lanka and Italy, with Newport, R.I., as the home port. For a complete itinerary, see the ship’s chronology.

The back of the book contains a directory of all Abbot crewmen, listed with their home towns. The officers are also listed with their universities.
This cruise book was printed in black and white, and bound in a dark blue hard cover with a two-color map of the cruise on the endsheets (also available below). The book binding was tight, and so the inner margins of many pages were glued and cannot be seen.
