I served in the Navy Reserve from 1964 to 1966 during which time I was promised a cruise to Bermuda on this magnificent ship. Unfortunately, they had already made the decision to decommission this vessel and I was selected to help in the accomplishment of this task. I was a little disappointed at the time, but after I did some research on the ship and reviewed its history, I felt very Honored to be a part of such an undertaking.

My Grandfather was in the Navy during WWII and invented the Snorkel for the Submarine Service. My brother was also in the Navy and served on the Ticonderoga and the Randolph carriers. We were all very proud to have served in the United States Navy and to do our part to protect our Great Country!!! I would also like to be added to the mailing list.

Fantastic site! I served aboard the Abbot from October 1959 to September 1961 as RD3 before departing for college. I interacted with three memorable officers while onboard: Capt. Robert Norman ( Pearl Harbor hero), Lt. Marcus A Arnheiter ( became captain of the USS Vance and the subject of a book), and Ensign Ray Taylor ( retired as Rear Admiral). A recent saying from the " Tin Can Sailor" newspaper sure fits me. I knew a lad who went to sea And left the land behind I knew him well, the lad was me And now I cannot find him

I attended several reunions with him while he was alive, sadly he passed in 2011, but I still enjoy looking threw the Abbot information. Thank you for this web site.

Enjoyed your history of Abbot DD 184 immensely, and I didn't previously know that my grandmother's brother ever commanded a brand new destroyer. I do have a bit of a correction to your history, though. William Nicholas Richardson, Jr. of Athens, AL died in 1938 and was the son of a lawyer and a man who was pressed into service as a Confederate soldier at the age of 15 (and paroled as a POW at the age of 16), however, the 'famous lawyer and congressman' William Nicholas Richardson 1839-1915 that you refer to was actually the skipper's great uncle. He too was colorful, having been saved from the noose less than an hour before his appointed execution as a Confederate spy (which he was not) by none other than Nathan Bedford Forrest of later KKK fame.

I reported aboard Abbot in Casco Bay (Portland) and served during the shakedown cruise through the Canal to Honolulu, where I was detached for flight training. I can't make the reunion (hit 91 in June!), but would like to hear from anyone who served during the period I was aboard. I knew Walter. Congratulations on an excellent site! I ran into the USSKidd/Desron48 Association about 12 years ago and have gone to all the annual meetings ever since. I don't mean to be picky, but I was a Torpedoman on the USS Erben,DD631 from the time it was on it's shakedown in 1943. We had Commodore Bottom and his staff on board because the Erben was the Squadron Leader of Destroyer Squadron48 and of DesDiv 96 as well. I remember him well, because I was on the Torpedo Director on the Bridge and had many conversations with him during down times at GQ. . I've appreciated reading the diaries here which reminded me again of events I had almost forgotten. I do remember that many times the 9 ships in DesRon48 were scattered and on different missions and these accounts show a number of actions where we were not with the Abbot, but on some other event. It was a mighty big ocean and this 19 year old kid will never forget the endless days at sea as well as the endless hours at GQ! Thanks for the memories! B ... While visiting family back in Salem, MA I stopped by a thrift/antique store and, being a collector of military patches etc, ended up leaving with an old decal/postcard(?) of the USS Abbot logo on yellowing cardstock in a plastic bag with an embroidered patch from Bermuda. I dont see any connection to Bermuda in the ships history and was wondering if any one knew of any connection between the two or if it was just a coincidence that they were together. I appologize if this is the wrong forum for this, but I would love any information. I can gladly email pictures of the postcard or patch if any one's interest has been peaked.

Served aboard "Long Ears" ABBOT DD-629 from 57-60. Went aboard as as SN and left as a SO2. Have many fond memories from that time in my life. Still maintain contact with a couple of wonderful crew members. Ed Wilson and John Alford. The "Long Ears" were painted on the hedgehog mounts because we were in a screen during an ASW exercise and picked up contact on a sub at periscope depth about 10 miles in front of the screen. We steamed at flank speed through the screen and simulated sinking the denizen of the deep LOL. The captain received kudos's from the commander of the operation and was so happy the ears were painted on the mounts the next day. We steamed back to port much like a sub would do with a broom denoting a "clean sweep".

Dad is now deceased, at a very young age of 52. I am 58 and never heard him speak of those years. I want to thank you all for putting this together. My father, SSM3c Bernard P. Shields, served aboard the Abbot during WW2, from the initial cruise, through to the time just prior to her heading for Japan. Fairly certain the crew member at the far left in the photograph ABB065 is my father (SSM3c Bernard P. Shields). He worked in the ship's laundry, ran the port side whaleboat, and his battle station was the aft-most 20mm gun on the starboard side. I knew Charles "Dinty" Moore, (one of his shipmates) from the time when he owned a restaurant in Fitchburg, MA. He and my Dad would always have some good stories. Once he gave me a replica "Bosun's Pipe" and showed me how to use it. I also met another of his shipmates, Bill Shaw, back in the mid 1960's, in Gorham, ME when we were all returning to MA from a family vacation in Ellsworth, ME. Quite a few of the photographs on the site are ones I have copies of from his old Navy album. I also have some others, I'll have to scan and send in when I get a chance.

I really enjoyed the site, especially the footage your ship took of battleship South Dakota bombarding Honshu. Yes, that is the South Dakota no doubt, you can see the bow mounted forty mm gun, and if one really looks closely the four 5-inch on each side instead of five like Massachusetts and Indiana. My father just left that ship, and I know it well, and have many pictures and models. He was a career mustang type and went from apprentice seaman to LCDR in a career from 1927-1957. Great pictures, and film , glad your ship could escort the South Dakota that day. Thanks Joe Sandling

My father was Charles Pendleton WT2c. He served on board the Abbot from 23 Apr 1943 until fall of 1945. Not sure of his last day but I know it was after 1 Oct 1945 due to the imformation on this wonderful website and before 13 Nov 1945 due to his DD214. My father never talked about his experiences during the war but this site has given a glimpse of what his life was like during those 2 war years. I was aboard the Abbot as a Fire Control Tech from late '55 until mid '57. We made a Med cruise in 1956 that I cannot find any information on. I'm helping restore the USS Cassin Young (DD793) in the Charlestown Navy Yard. Stop by and say "Hello".

12/08/2005...Great site...I went aboard the Abbot early 1957, in Newport, RI and served till I got out of the Navy in Jan 1959. I served as a Signalman and then became a Quartermaster and left as a QM3. Seen tours to Rio and was with her off Beruit for the thirty days we were parked there. Great memories, especially with bud...Larry Blackman (lost contact). I ended up making a career of the Navy and retired as a QMC in March or 1977. By the way both my sons served in the Navy and one is still in. I envy the one still having his Zippo, I now collect. and yes I do remember CDR WW Deventer and Frank M. Korb, as quartermaster I worked for him as thew Navigator. Also CO was R.M. Pond with Korb and what about LT Marcus A. Arnheiter, who's book I still have, the Arnkeiter Affaire...but did he ever save my butt in Greece.

This is a wonderful site. I used to work as a guide aboard the USS KIDD DD-661 in Baton Rouge, which served in the same squadron as the ABBOT during the war. I had the pleasure of meeting some of the Abbot's crew over the years. Keep up the great work!

My dad, Arthur Maurice Melcher, served aboard the USS Pollux from about March, 1944, through about May, 1946. I have most of the letters he and my mother wrote to each other almost every week during that time. I found in Curt E. Presley's memoirs that on February 1, 1945, the Abbot delivered mail to the Pollux. I can now look at the letters from that time period and know that one of them was delivered by the Abbot. Thank you, Abbot crew!

My father was a Metalsmith First Class/Diver and served on the USS CHAUNCEY DD667 in DESRON 48 with the Abbot in 1944-45. He always spoke highly of the Abbot and the others in the squadron. He passed away in March 2001. He was a Pearl Harbor Survivor (MUGFORD DD389) so my brother and I scattered his ashes in Pearl Harbor on 12/07/01. The Navy gave him full military honors. Great website, thanks. Aloha!

This is great. My Pepe was a cook onboard the USS Abbot. My mother gave me this link and thought I might be interested to see what my Pepe was doing many years ago when he was in the US Navy. Currently I have been enlisted in the US Navy now for 4 years. I am a Gunners Mate onboard the USS San Jacinto (CG-56) homeported out of Norfolk, Virginia. It is quite impressive the history of the Abbot and the great ships of the past. Out of respect for this site as well as the history and value of those who have served before me I am going to create a presentation and hold a memorial service onboard my ship with our crew to talk about the USS Abbot and her fine crew. This is the only way I can make thanks to my Pepe his shipmates, my shipmates and all those who allowed me to join the Navy 4 years ago and carry on the great traditions of The greatest nation in the world. Thank you. GM2 (SW) PATRICK M MILLIGAN USS SAN JACINTO (CG-56)

12/19/03 Fond memories of ABBOT and shipmates. At this time of year, I think back 60 years ago as we were leaving Pearl enroute to Funafuti, Elice Islands and staging for the Marshalls invasion. Crossed the equator on Christmas Day 1943. Our skipper then was CDR Marshal E. Dornin and after 18 years in the Navy, he was still a pollywog so the shellbacks treated him as such. I am a plankowner, aboard on 23 April 1943. As I was stowing my gear in aft compartment, Chief Westbrook tapped me on the shoulder and let me know that I was going messcooking so moved my gear to the messhall. Stayed with ABBOT thru decommissioning in San Diego in Feb 46, and was assigned to 19th fleet and assisted in decommissioning the rest of the squadron ships. Left the ship as SK1 and then stayed for 30 years, retired in 1973 as CDR at Fleet Air Alameda. Thanks to Charlie for alerting us to this site.
