Abbot’s bridge seen during refueling from aircraft carrier Hornet (CVA-12). Task Group 70.2 operations near Philippine Sea. July or August 1954. Immediately after these refueling photos were taken, an “emergency breakaway” was sounded. The ships separated in less-than-optimal manner, chopping apart all interconnecting fuel lines with axes. Although the ships were saved from collision, they were not able to properly finish their fuel transfer. Needless to say, the afterdeck of the Abbot was totally awash with thick bunker fuel oil.
