George Rider soaked in fuel oil

Note the blackened orange life jacket. The weld securing a deck cleat came loose, and the line securing a fueling hose backed out of the entrance hole. It caught me flush with fuel charged to the nozzle, and knocked me and Shoemaker to the deck.

Al Jolson had nothing on us. Our clothes down to the skivvies had to be destroyed and it took weeks to get the fuel our of our hair. We tried to grab the hose but it was snaking all over the place and was too slippery to handle. We managed to prevent it from going overboard and eventually the fueling continued.

What a mess!
